Something New Is Coming to the High Desert.

There is no dedicated maternity housing in San Bernardino, Riverside, or San Diego Counties for pregnant women experiencing homelessness. Not one bed designed for pregnancy and the postpartum year specifically.

The Problem

A Gap No One Has Closed

A woman who is 34 weeks pregnant and unhoused gets the same shelter cot as everyone else, if she gets one at all — and then she's discharged from the hospital with a newborn and no address.

We're building SoCal Community Homes' maternity program to close that gap. Our first homes are planned for Hesperia and Victorville, serving pregnant women and new mothers experiencing homelessness throughout San Bernardino County's High Desert — with plans to extend this program into Riverside and San Diego Counties as we grow.

Our Model

A Two-Stage Residence Model

Purpose-built housing that follows a mother from pregnancy through the postpartum year.

Stage One — Pregnancy Residence

A safe home for the duration of pregnancy, with residents connected to:

  • Birth doula support
  • Childbirth education
  • Enrollment assistance for Medi-Cal, WIC & CalFresh
  • Prenatal care coordination

Stage Two — Postpartum Residence

Continued housing through the newborn year, with residents connected to:

  • Postpartum doula support
  • Newborn care specialist support
  • Lactation consulting
  • Housing navigation toward permanent stability

Perinatal services are provided in partnership with a Medi-Cal contracted doula group — which means the clinical support is already funded, and the housing is the only thing we're building.

A Question We're Asking

How Many Pregnant Clients Have You Had to Turn Away?

Specifically, we want to know: how many pregnant clients have you had to turn away because there was no appropriate place to send them? Nobody is tracking that number. It should exist.

If you've faced this problem, we want to hear from you — and we want to build the solution together.
